Abundant Roots

Abundant Roots explores and honors the intimate link between food justice and public art in Philadelphia. This design depicts the inherent partnership between visual art and food justice work in our city. Philadelphia has one of the largest indexes of murals per capita, and simultaneously an unusually high number of urban food farms. Utilizing the power of visual symbolism to celebrate Food Justice movements, this image displays a vibrant urban orchard. Through the roots, sunlight, and farmer’s hands, the viewer is welcomed into the regenerative cycles of inner-city farming. In addition, depicted here are abundant fruit trees that will produce food for Philadelphia communities. The housing and chain-link fence that surrounds the heart of the garden portrays the resiliency of urban agriculture.

When looking into the Philadelphia identity, it is evident that
communities in this city have been creating systems for food sustainability for generations. History shows us that food access/ food security have always been fought for by the most marginalized groups. This mural honors this legacy. It is also a loving prayer for food security in Philadelphia—a
call to action for viewers to support local food justice efforts.
